Young Carers

We are committed to ensuring that all pupils get the support they need to have a positive school experience, are happy in school and can achieve their full potential.

We know that for some pupils, factors outside of school can have a big impact on this, particularly if there is someone in their family or a friend who is ill, disabled, or has a mental health problem or an addiction. We think in every class there could be 1 pupil who is helping to support someone because of one of these factors – we call these pupils young carers.

Pupils can be young carers for lots of different reasons:

  • Emotional support and supervision- cheering someone up when they are unhappy, supporting someone to keep them safe, keeping someone company.
  • Practical household tasks- cooking, cleaning and tidying any room in the house, helping someone wash their clothes
  • Personal care- Washing someone’s hair, helping someone wash, helping someone get dressed.
  • Medication Support- Reminding someone to take their medication, bringing someone their medication, collecting medication from the pharmacy
  • Caring for siblings
  • Financial or administrative responsibilities- Managing a weekly budget, working, taking responsibility for the food shop, paying bills

There is lots of support available for young carers and their families should they ever need it – both inside and outside of school. If you have a child that is a young carer, they can also access a range of benefits. Please see the leaflet attached for more information.

If you think your child might be a young carer, or could be affected by any of the issues we’ve highlighted, please let us know by calling the school office or using our Contact Us form here :
